        Mr. P.P. Lal teaches Mathematics in forms 3B, 5G, 6J and Physics in form seven. Mr. Deo takes Mathematics in forms 4D, 6K, 7P and Physics for form six. Mrs. Tevita takes Mathematics in forms 3A, 5H and 7M. Our lone ranger Mr. Young takes Mathematics for form 4C. Miss Lata takes technical drawing and Physics in form five. Mr. B. Kumar takes technical drawing in exam forms and Mr. S. Kumar takes computing in higher forms.

 Maths/Physics Department Report

             As the year unfolded, especially after the on and off period of yester year, the department looked forward to the challenges and activities with great anticipation.

             This year has been an eventful one with numerous achievements to date.

 Yat Sen Mathematics Association

            The YSMA has been the brainchild of its first president Shi Heng. It was formally launched this year. I would like to thank all its members for conducting tutorials, speed tests and trials for competitions in the strive for excellence.

 FMC

            The Fiji Mathematics Competition was held on the 24th May 2001 at the school. A total of forty eight students took part. Yan Yi Li and Wei Ling Wang won prizes of $20.00 each. There were thirty one distinctions, twelve credits and one pass. Congratulations to all the winners.

 

Team Mathematics Competition

            The Southern Zone Team Competition was held at the FCAE on Friday, 15th June and the National Finals on 15th September. We took our class 7 and 8 teams as well. The coaching and trials organized internally by the teachers and the YSMA gave a tremendous success at the zone meet and the finals. The results are as follows:

The teams won themselves certificates, lucrative prizes and plaques for the school. Yat Sen came second overall.

 The Award Evening

            The award evening was held on Friday 8th June at ISS. The chief guest, Mr. Ananda Rao of USP has this message:

“If the problem knocks you, admire it, if you knock the problem, find another, a harder one”

Loo Yu Mao received a take away trophy and other gift packs for scoring the highest in the Form 5 level in FMC in 2000. Joane Mar and Kelvin Law received consolation prizes and gifts packs for winning certificates in their categories.

 AMC

A total of eighty nine students have taken part in the annul Australian Mathematics Competition. He Wen Hon in the junior grade won a prize of $44.04. Wei Ling Wang and Yan Yi Li in the intermediate grade won prizes $55.05 each. Loo Yu Mao in the senior grade won a prize of $55.05. Wei Ling Wang also received the Special Achievement Certificated for best-standardized score. Pauline Yip, a non-prize winner received the special award, the AMC Trust Pen for the least number of wrong answers. A summary of the results is as follows.

 Junior Physics Quiz

            The junior Physics Quiz was organized by the South Pacific Physics Society. Thirty-three of our form four students have taken part in the competition. We are still awaiting results.

 Australian Schools Computer Studies Competition

            Twenty five students have taken part in the competition. The results were as follows:

On behalf of the department, I would like to congratulate all the winners and would be winners in their respective competitions.

 Finally, I would like to thank all the departments for their guidance, cooperation and effort put in to make this a successful mathematical year. I would also like to thank the school administration and support.

 The greatest achievement of all is the achievement of success.
