Message From The Principal
The end of each school year is a time for retrospection. It is time to ponder on
and evaluate the year’s numerous activities and in doing so to identify the
dominant feature which marks each year as unique and memorable. In this regard,
2001 will be remembered for our ability as a school community to work together
as a team to achieve our goals.
Team work is enduring, timeless human characteristic without which human
endeavour cannot succeed. Team work enables us to pool our talents, abilities
and resources to achieve our goals and objectives. Team work draws out the
leadership qualities of those at the helm and engenders willingness to cooperate
in those who form part of a team.
Today, team work is indispensable for we live in a borderless world made
paradoxically smaller by phenomenal advances in communications technology.
Today, more so than ever before, physical borders and geographic inaccessibility
have succumbed to the virtual reality of cyberspace. Groups of individuals and
nations have therefore to mark new boundaries for their commonality of interest.
In this exercise, team work is essential to success.
This year, our school community has demonstrated that we can succeed in such a
world as we can work together as a team. We achieved this in academic work, in
cultural and social activities. A notable example is our performance in this
year’s Fiji Mathematics Association competitions which necessitated team work.
The competition requires each level in secondary school to field a team of four
members, from Forms 1-7 . Drawing on the ability of our Primary school, we
fielded a combined total of seven teams in the zone competitions. Our teams
performed outstandingly, resulting in six of our seven teams qualifying for the
national finals, where we emerged victorious, winning overall second in Fiji,
with a placing for five of our six teams which qualified for the finals. This is
no mean achievement and is an excellent example of team work on the part of all
Mathematics teachers and students.
Earlier in the year, our Student Council, with the support and cooperation of
the student body, organized another successful Talent Quest showcasing the
artistic and creative talents of our students, and the considerable
organizational abilities of our Student Council members.
A dimension of our socially responsible school community as evident in a project
initiated and led by the Vice-Principal, Mrs. Tevita, to commemorate in a
tangible way 2001, Year of Volunteers. The project involved a group of some
thirty of our students cleaning up the St Christopher’s Home in Naulu and
entertaining the young children.
Perhaps the most visible example of our team work as a school community is the
construction of our school hall. It is the culmination of the vision,
determination and careful husbandry of our resources on the part of our School
Board, and the support of generous parents, students and the community at large.
When the School Hall is completed some time next year, our school will be able
to enrich the curriculum, because we will have facilities for the creative and
expressive arts.
All this has been made possible because of team work.
