Sports 1998

YSSS 1998 Sports Report

1998 has been an extremely ‘sporty’ year for Yat Senners. A handful of students have made the school proud by being representatives of Fiji in various sporting events, and many more have done the same by representing the school.

EARTH SPORTS

Netball: In the first week of the second term holidays, the Inter-Secondary School Netball Tournament was held in Taveuni. Yat Sen was able to send a team that was our U-17 team. Although the girls fell short of a title, they had so much fun we’re lucky they didn’t decide to join Corpus Cristi.

Also, in the second term, our U-17 and U-15 netball teams took part in weekend matches against other schools to gain some experience, face some tough competition and enjoy themselves while they were at it! Overall, they did us proud and would like to thank Mrs. Teleni and Ms Waqalevu for coaching them.

Basketball: Then there was the ever so popular Inter-Secondary School Basketball Championships which kicked off in the second week of the term two holidays. As always, Yat Sen fielded a number of teams. The U-15 boys, and U-17 boys and girls got through to the finals but only our U-17 boys were able to snatch the winning title. All the teams did exceptionally well though. The Most Valuable Player in the tournament was awarded to our very own Afatereki Mataika of the U-17 boys team. Congratulations to all the participants for a job well done.

Still on the subject of basketball, Eleina McDonald of form 5 was part of the U-22 National Basketball team that went to New Caledonia in September for the Bi_Annual Championships.

Badminton: Our budding badminton reps underwent stiff competition in the Secondary Schools Badminton tournament that took place during the second term holidays. They did well, with Karen Whiteside of Form 3 winning the Seniors. Karen also represented Fiji at the 1998 Commenwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

AQUATICS

Swimming: The Swimming Carnival which was held earlier in the year was a success, with some of our own swimmers winning medals and uplifting the school’s name. Thanks to Miss Yee, their coach, they did exceptionally well in their individual events.

Paddling: The Second Term holidays really ‘huped! Apart from the Basketball Tournament and the Netball Tournament, the 8th Va’a World Outrigger Canoeing Championships was held here in Suva at the Suva Waterfront. Eleven students from Yat Sen were part of the very memorable event. Jacqui St. Julian and Raina Lal were part of the team that took out the gold medal in the U-16 1500m race.

So, all in all, the students of YSSS have had a good sporting year! Let’s hope that the coming years are even more enjoyable.
