Student Council

The Student Council consists of twenty members with two representatives from each form. Some of our more major contributions this year have been the SAVES scheme which was initially coordinated and organized as a partnership between Yat Sen Secondary School and UNDP/UNOPS SMILE Programme. The main objectives for SAVES are to develop the habit of saving among students and to accumulate savings for the students’ future education.

Presently we have 148 students participating with an average of $400 a week. Although students are meant to save regularly, the running of the scheme is kept flexible to fit in with the normal school programme.

Another major accomplishment was the talent quest which returned to our annul program after a lapse of 3 years. It was held at the civic auditorium with the then Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mr. K. Dakuidreketi as our guest of honour. It is my belief that the future of Yat Sen will uphold this tradition and I would like to thank Mrs. E. Telai and Mrs. B. Ali for their continued guidance and support. To the future of Yat-Sen, I wish you all the best.

Warren Fong
President of Student Council
, 2001.

The Yat Sen Student Council was and is made up of democratically elected representatives of the students. It comprises of two reps. per form, one male and one female. Over the years the Student Council has been established as a forum for students to voice their opinions on any issue. Our President, Edward Lee, has guided us through the year. This year is an eventful one as his leadership skills have shown. The Student Council’s aim is to answer and solve and problems that the students might have, and to organise social events, so that school does not become a monotonous drone of role learning.

Student Council Member, 2000.

As a former Students Council rep, one can learn to appreciate the tasks that pile up on the council’s agenda. Some seem insurmountable but were overcome. This is a case of general unity within the Y.S.S.S. community, with a united stand to accomplish tasks. The Student Council is a self-regulatory forum and as such is vital to the healthy running of any institution with a student body.

The Y.S.S.S. Student Council has for years stood independent and strong. Following current trends, there is a definite certainly that it will continue to be an integral part of the Y.S.S.S. community.
