The idea of our very own Maths association was first mooted by Shi Heng about 2 years ago. It was a brilliant idea! We made small discussions at times and decided to pursue the idea. Shi Heng consulted with the Principal, Mrs. Ali and the Maths HOD, Mr. Lal, and also received their favourable responses. However, it wasn’t until late last year that the association finally gained some momentum. A meeting took place to elect office bearers. Operations of the association commenced officially this year.

The main objective of the association is to stimulate student’s interest in order to promote ‘Mathematicianship’. Activities are mainly organised by interested and enthusiastic students and include competitions and tutorials. In this way, many activities are complementary to classroom work. One main activity that the association devoted the most was the preparation for the Fiji Maths Team Competition. This year saw the inclusion of the Forms 1 and 2 from our Primary School. It basically consists of a four-member team competing with others schools. All our teams (except Form 7) qualified for the National finals, which were held on 15th September at the Fiji College of Advance Education. The Yat Sen Teams came second overall in this exciting and challenging event. The results reflected some success in the association.

There are currently some 44 members in the association. Members pay less to enter competitions and there are normally cash prices. It is hoped that there will be more activities in the future and more students participate.

On a final note, our hard working friend, Shi Heng, has left us for Auckland earlier this year. The association is at a loss for not able to have his service any longer and acknowledges his contributions. The YSMA would like to wish everyone the best of luck in the exams. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
