I congratulate the students for their fine performance and salute my teachers for a job well done.

The activities of   2005,both academic and non-academic occurred as planned and were successfully accomplished.

The teachers, parents, School Board and students worked as a team and the Yat Sen Spirit of perseverance with respect was outstanding.

The special theme emphasized in the school this year is “Respect" for it is the value which overcomes dishonesty, distrust, greed and selfishness and helps to build unity and peace. I am very grateful to all the teachers for inculcating in the students the importance of respect in their daily lives.

I wish to elaborate on   2significant events this year which are of marked importance in the history and development of this school:

(i) The  150th Anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese immigrants to Fiji.

(ii)The approval by the Ministry of Education for Chinese Language to be a
Vernacular Option in the new restructured FJC program commencing in 2006.

This school is a major investment of the Chinese Community of Fiji, just as Yat Sen Primary School has been since 1936.The Chinese Community has contributed widely to the building of this nation and one of its major contributions to the field of Education is the establishment of Yat Sen Primary and Secondary Schools. In these two schools Chinese Language and Culture are taught as subjects. All students that pass through the schools appreciate the many traditional Chinese Values of Hard work, self discipline, respect, honesty and integrity that are essential component of the school system.

Today only  55%of the school population are Chinese/ Part Chinese; the other 45% are grateful for the opportunity to be educated in this school and to share the excellent learning facilities provided.

This year the school acknowledged the significance of the celebration and participated in the procession through the city of Suva as well as in the Essay Competition organized by the Fiji Chinese Association.

The second event is the successful negotiation spearheaded by the Chairman of the Board, Mr. Gregory Yee, for the Chinese Language to be a vernacular subject in external examinations. In 2006, Chinese Language will be a Vernacular option for our Form 3 students who will be preparing for the FJC Examination at the end of Form 4 (2007).

The Ministry has also given the given green light for Chinese Language to be an optional subject in the near future.

2005 has been a challenging year. The students and teachers have worked very closely as expected of a family, particularly when loved ones are lost. I pay tribute to the good parenting at home that has enabled students to respond generously. There have been moments of disappointment due to misbehavior of students but again forms of punishment given and counseling helped greatly.

The strive for excellence in academic work takes priority again this year and I am grateful to the excellent team effort put in by all stakeholders.

I now take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of the following:

  • Mrs. Iva Teilai (Vice-Principal), Mrs.Mere Latu Teleni (Assistant Principal for their commitment and dedication; the Heads of Department namely Mrs.Mere Young, Mr.P.P.Lal, Mrs. Luisa Taito, Mrs. Alarita Veramu and Mrs. Rita Kumar for their excellent work.
